• I'm more into history than science, and with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing coming up, this feat definitely qualifies as history, even though I remember watching it as an 11yr. old kid on the B&W TV in the corner of our living room. The scientific details described here are understandable to--and appreciated by--this non-scientist. And I love the narrative style that reads like a good fiction novel. The hold-on-to-your-seats description of the actual moon landing had me doubting they'd make it even while knowing that they did. If you have any interest at all in the space race and Apollo 11, get this book. Command module pilot Michael Collins says it's "extensively researched and meticulously accurate" and he would be the person to know if any detail is missing or inaccurate.
• If you think you know this story or if you are new to it, you will be captivated by this gracefully written book. The research is impeccable, and the complicated scientific material rendered comprehensible to all by the author's straightforward and clear prose. This is a book worthy of the heroes who reached for the stars and left to their nation and the world a record of extraordinary achievement.
• Growing up in Houston during the Space Race, I was familiar with most of the story. That does not mean that a good story should not be retold. Most readers will recognize about 70% of the book. The author has done an excellent job of adding new information from Russia’s archives, and fleshing out the individual personalities of the astronauts. He has also placed certain Missions in the proper context. Americans had grow bored with flights that did not orbit the moon; yet Apollo 9 and 10 were very important to a successful lunar landing. The author explained that very well.
  
  The sad part is that a magnificent story, well researched, gets muddled by the author and editor. Donovan has an interesting and sometimes odd way of describing things. It sometimes lacks polish. The more difficult problem is his constant use of run-on sentences. Sentences that run on for 5-7 lines of text are common. I do not think he is familiar with the use of a semicolon. One sentence covered ten lines of text. It had multiple parenthetical phrases separated, at times, by commas and at other times by dashes. You have to reread them and, even then, I was not sure the author intended the comment to be positive or negative. It creates a lot of ambiguity that a good editing could have corrected. There is a caption under a photo that reads “Aldrin takes the first step onto the moon’s surface.” Now unless you think the event occurred on a Disney sound stage, you know that Armstrong was the photographer. It should have said “Aldrin takes his first step onto the moon’s surface.” Donavan had gone into some detail about Armstrong got to be first. Why would you create an ambiguity now?
  
  There is a good bit of discussion about NASA being a civilian and not a military program. Of course, we all know that NASA has had its share of military programs. Throughout the book army, navy and air force are not capitalized. In fact, they do not even merit a slot in the index. Given the patriotic nature of the event, I would have capitalized Army, Navy and Air Force and not treat them as common nouns.
  
  It is a shame that a lack of editing got in the way of a good story. Maybe the publisher will see the wisdom of hiring a good proofreader and editor. Then, they would have a four or five star book.
• The Apollo program was vast and complicated, yet this absorbing narrative gets to the heart of the story and makes it human. James Donovan’s focus is on the men and women who gave their all to the mission, whether it be the countless technicians or the famous astronauts themselves. His writing is infused with energy and purpose—he has a great eye for detail and atmosphere, and the narrative never gets bogged down by the enormity of the mission. Every reader knows how this ends, but it takes a special author to make it suspenseful and interesting nonetheless. A spectacular read.

• This book was simply fantastic. It's one of the most beautiful, soulful and inspiring design and lifestyle book that I have read in a very very long time. I couldn't wait for it to come out and it exceeded my expectations. I am so in love with not only the surfing lifestyle, but the philosophy of living behind it. Getting a sneak peek into the living environments while learning about what makes these free spirits tick brought such a great peacefulness to life. While the world churns out negativity, division, anger and disrespect, this book is a breath of fresh salty air. I love it and want to pick up a surf board or at least go put my feet in the sand and appreciate everything I have in life.
• This book was everything I hoped it would be and more. Nina Freudenberger is an incredible talent, with a top eye for beautiful design. Her unique sensibility creates artful yet liveable inviting spaces. After reading this book, I sent it to all my friends as gifts. Everyone shared the same sentiment.
• This is a wonderful book with casual homes, many with reclaimed materials, and plenty of wood. Most of the homes are furnished with colorful textiles and have a laid-back feel. There's no pretension here. Of course there are plenty of surf boards. The book is printed on heavy paper and has some weight to it. Overall, I'm very pleased.
• Many coffee table books collect dust once they're placed on display. Not so with this lovely tome! Yes, it's pretty enough to sit on my shelf, but it also collects old-fashioned page views from visiting family and friends. The photographs are drenched in light and chock full of design inspiration. Best of all, the images and text really transport you to the many exotic and far-flung locales featured in the book. It's a must-read for anyone looking to create a laid-back, bohemian vibe in their space.
• This book is as beautiful in person as I'd hoped from taking a peek at the preview. Featuring super chic / chill "surf shacks" from across the globe, plus stories about the people who live this awesomely laid-back surf-positive lifestyle, it's a book that takes you into a very specific world. It's a great getaway read, and an ideal accent for any coffee or end table. I've had a few guests over since I received it and everyone gravitates toward it. Even now that I've already read it (the words really are as compelling as the images), I find myself returning to it again and again.
• This book is beautiful - bought it just for the spine color, and it’s as gorgeous in person as I imagined.
  
  I was disappointed that it shipped without a plastic covering or protectant of any kind; usually these books come in a plastic sleeve. It rained the day I received this book, and I met the delivery man at the door, but the back of the book was dirty from rubbing against the wet cardboard box. I scrubbed it and the dirt mostly came off, but the book has some water stains. Not the state you want to receive a new purchase in.
  
  That being said, the product itself is still beautiful.
• I bought this book for my husband, the design enthusiast, and he was super happy with it. We both love to glimpse at home and interior aesthetics. It is nice to get off pinterest and instagram and hold a thought out and beautiful book exploring this fun lifestyle. If you love interiors and design you will love this book.
• This is a MUST buy and MUST have in your home! Nina has an incredible eye and has created such warmth interweaving her design aesthetic with truly honoring surf communities laid back mentality and beautiful approach to life. I love the personal touches of each story and the stunning photography. I will recommend this to anyone and everyone!!

Back when I started this project, I was thinking what the heck, writing a few short stories will keep me fresh, let me try things I might not try otherwise, act as a sketch book of my story ideas the funny, the weird, the scary, the sappy, and sometimes all of that mashed up together. 

Well, two years later, I had no idea how proud I would be of this body of work, and how genuinely psyched I am to be sharing these stories with you in this format. Going through these again for production, I felt like a proud papa, gathering up all my little babies, or like I was collecting a bag of gems. 

Wow, I just wrote "bag of gems" in all seriousness, like it's a totally everyday phrase, like I might find myself out on horseback in some medieval European country and have the need to reach into my little leather sack for a gem to purchase an entire village.

I found every one of the stories in this "bag of gems" to be imaginative, entertaining, and well worth my time. My favorites were "End Game", with its apocalyptically popular video game and Purgatory, which was just a little familiar, but with some nerdy twists.

I have yet to read anything written by Rob Dircks that wasn't wildly enjoyable and didn't take itself too seriously. I certainly hope more volumes of these cool little stories are on their way soon, because I can't wait to geek out on every single one of them."

• This is a great selection of short stories written by one of my favorite sci-fi/comedy authors, Rob Dircks. As a bonus, he also narrates the audio version. • Just finished this book. Seriously consider Mr. Dircks' advice and read only one story at a time with a break in between to contemplate. I'm a voracious reader and tend to just read books straight through, but after the first story I just had to pause. Some stories are better than others as can be said about any short story collection. But there weren't any that I didn't enjoy. Not as funny as the Tesla books but there is humor.

Questo numero di Anarres è unificato dall’attenzione verso dialoghi letterari e culturali, interazioni tra testi, fasi storiche, tradizioni nazionali.

Innanzitutto, è un dialogo collettivo e transnazionale quello intrapreso con Ursula K. Le Guin da chi ha partecipato al forum dedicato al suo ricordo, da Raffaella Baccolini a Eleonora Federici, Carlo Pagetti, Salvatore Proietti, a prestigiosi ospiti internazionali come David Ketterer, Joseph McElroy e Tom Moylan.

Brian Attebery, riprendendo dalla biologia il modello dei mitocondri, presenta la SF, in particolare quella delle donne, come un “book club”, libri che cooperano scambiando motivi, concetti, omaggi, e che si rendono possibili a vicenda, le revisioni anche modi per dare nuova vita alla memoria di testi e scrittrici (e scrittori) precedenti. E i book club sono molti, dagli Inkling alle reti testuali di autrici che coinvolgono Le Guin, Tiptree, Fowler, Atwood, Russ, Haraway, fino alla scena odierna.

Roberta Mori legge il rapporto di Primo Levi con la critica italiana contemporanea, rivelatore sia di inattese consonanze sia di tanti preconcetti ma davanti al dialogo sovente negato, Levi ne instaura uno con la SF che leggeva.

Anche quello tracciato da Alessandro Fambrini per Franz Fühmann, importante voce anche fantascientifica nel dissenso della Germania Est, è un dialogo possibile con figure inglesi e americane come Pohl & Kornbluth e Naomi Mitchison.

La conversazione è letteralmente la forma scelta dal compianto Riccardo Valla, in collaborazione con Antonino Fazio, per parlare dell’intrico concettuale costituito da scienza, magia, religione, fantascienza, fantasy.

Scrivendo su J.R.R. Tolkien, Proietti ipotizza una visione giustificata dai riferimenti teorici alla forma intrinsecamente dialogica del folklore, leggendo apertura e incompiutezza come intrinseche alle sue affabulazioni – una strada seguita da una parte della fantasy statunitense d’oggi.
