Yid un Goy Yingl
After a chance meeting in San Francisco in 1999 of two diametrically dissimilar men, one a Conservative Israeli Talmudic scholar, the other a gay English artist, they are immediately propelled into a complex and often perplexing relationship. This psychologically intense though frequently amusing account of unlikely bedfellows, involves sexual identity, fantasy, and a fierce struggle to retain their fundamental identities, where ultimately they need all their resolve to fight for individual mental, spiritual and physical survival.

"This is a dark and deeply disturbing bio-novel, but there is also a great deal of humor woven throughout. The story is about a Jewish man who cannot reconcile his sexual nature with his religious beliefs, and about a disenchanted artist who literally hides his talent in a closet through fear of failure and rejection. The artist’s mother and cat are well portrayed, and my favorite character in the book is Ben the Yiddish cat who says a lot by saying nothing at all. This is an excellent read."

- This book is very funny and most queer, about a Gentile boy who wants to become Jewish and speak Yiddish. Then one day he meets a Yiddish speaking Jewish man who is not too cooperative about teaching him. There is a lot of physiological and religious drama going on here too, but viewed in a humorous and compassionate way. I am a young straight male and I was raised Christian, and I must have read a thousand books on all subjects, but I can honestly say I have never read a book quite like this one before. It is so real, yet totally beyond anything I have any experience of and it’s like looking into a world where people live in a way I could never even have begun to imagine. I kept being kinda shocked, and started thinking, am I being naïve here or what, because they are obviously real people but whose lives are just so clever and philosophical, yet completely flawed and disastrous, and yet there is also a lot of weird humor going on there too, and always somewhere a light at the end of the tunnel.
- If Dostoevsky, Kafka, Camus, Pinter, and Will Self, made up the Nobel Prize committee, without a doubt D.L. Forbes would win with his book _id Un Goy Yingl. This is a remarkable and haunting story and I have not enjoyed a book so much in a long time. I hope though that the bulk of this fraught though often comic story is fiction for the sake of all the characters depicted, and for the sake of humanity – and especially for Ben, the cat.

- Baggage is the unspoken burden in this novel, the kind we carry in our souls, and dealing with it or ignoring it drives the narrative. Whether the baggage is secular or religious, with sex being the common ground, tragedy and comedy spar for your attention. It is not an easy read, but it will make you do something very few books do. It will make you think about life, relationships and the burden of your own baggage. Do any of us really know who we are and what we are capable of?
