- I bought this book in anticipation of spending half a year studying Mandarin in Beijing. Flipping through it before leaving, I found it interesting but not enthralling. As my language skills have gotten a little better, I have found it much more useful, if more for the incredibly useful vocabulary than the sometimes overly formal phrases.
I would recommend this book to anyone going to China if developing language skills is a top priority. There is nothing like a heated discussion to help you want to learn a language better (although heated discussions might not fly so well in a culturally Chinese environment, which is why it is 4 stars and not 5. The majority of these subjects should be approached more cautiously in China than in America, I feel, and the book does not indicate anything to that effect).
I would also recommend it to anyone adopting a child from China, because there is an entire chapter on adoption with some very useful vocabulary. However, since most of the phrases are questions, not knowing the vocabulary on the returning end might be a problem.
So, you can get something out of it at any level, and get more out of it the more fluent you are in Chinese. Except of course if you are very fluent. But then, why would you be buying a phrasebook? - One problem I've had in studying Chinese is that the textbooks are pretty boring when it comes to conversational dialogues about anything meaningful or interesting. Most cover basic, getting-to-know-you or "where's the library?" -type conversations, but when it comes to current events, politics, environment, high-tech, societal issues, etc, existing textbooks are just rather timid and/or out of date. This nicely-designed book fills that void, with english/chinese characters/pinyin dialogues on a number of interesting topics, including politics and law, society, government, religion/philosophy, adoption of Chinese babies, etc. A lot of the sentences given are questions which lead to further dialogue, and I wish some of them went on longer, but I guess we've on our own from there. And there is a section at the end of each chapter with hot words to study. Recommended for 1st-to-3rd year students or more advanced/older speakers wanting to improve contemporary vocabulary.
