The Best Saturdays of Our Lives Mark McCray 9781491755082 Books Reviews
- This book is a great read for anyone who has ever found themselves to be interested in cartoons, television or business in general. '
Beginning with the origins of "The New Adventures of Superman", the book describes the cartoon worlds of the 1960's through to the 1990's. As one who was born in the 90's, I found it deeply rewarding to learn of the cartoons which preceded my lifetime -- cartoons like "Mr. T" and "The Archies" which I was only vaguely aware of by chance sightings of their respective re-runs or yard sale action figures.
By reading this book you will not only gain valuable information regarding practically all of the Saturday morning classics (and flops), but you will also learn of the dynamics between all of the different forces that come into play to create these shows!
In addition to being highly informative, this book is written with a very friendly writing style that is reminiscent of the joys of watching supernaturally excellent entertainment on the best Saturdays of our lives. And the best is yet to come! - A fun and informative documentation of a truly happening genre of television – the Saturday morning kids block. Young Mark McCray was so affected by this mélange of animation and live action he was later compelled to seek out the origins – by contacting creators and other major players – and document his discoveries in a newsletter he mailed to anyone he felt might care. Why, you ask? Because he just loved this stuff! Now all Mark’s findings have been compiled into one convenient place. The Archies, the Jackson 5, Scooby-Doo, Superman, H. R. Pufnstuf, X-Men and everything in between. If you want to know more about the world of animation check this book out and learn something fun.
- Great book providing insight into the development and history behind your favorite Saturday Morning Cartoons. It is a wonderful read for all. You will be Googling and YouTubing many of the forgotten classics referenced helping you re-trigger memories of early Saturday mornings in front of the tube. If you're a fan of cartoons and pop culture you need this book!

- Both a wealth of information, and personal opinions and reflections of the major moments in cartoon history, definitely has info in here you can't find elsewhere.
- Great, informative, fun examination of a topic near and dear to many hearts. Written with love and authority. If you ever loved sitting in front of a 1970s or '80s TV on a Saturday morning and soaking up the fun, this is the book for you.
- This is a fun and fact-filled journey through the history of Saturday morning cartoons. Mark's knowledge and love of animation history shows through on every page and will teach and inspire young and old fans of the genre. A really great read!
- This book is a fantastic trip down memory lane! Mark does a tremendous job providing insight into TV's Saturday morning cartoon landscape from the 1960's on. He clearly knows a lot about animation, and his passion comes through in these pages. This book provides an organized and in-depth look at how the studios, networks, producers, and executives shaped not just their programming schedules, but the hearts and minds of children (and parents...and teachers...and law makers) as well.
