In The Battle for Veterans' Healthcare, award-winning author Suzanne Gordon takes us to the front lines of federal policymaking and healthcare delivery, as it affects eight million Americans whose military service makes them eligible for Veterans Health Administration (VHA) coverage.

Gordon’s collected dispatches provide insight and information too often missing from mainstream media reporting on the VHA and from Capitol Hill debates about its future. Drawing on interviews with veterans and their families, VHA staff and administrators, health care policy experts and Congressional decision makers, Gordon describes a federal agency under siege that nevertheless accomplishes its difficult mission of serving men and women injured, in myriad ways, while on active duty.

The Battle for Veterans’ Healthcare is an essential primer on VHA care and a call to action by veterans, their advocacy organizations, and political allies. Without lobbying efforts and broader public understanding of what’s at stake, a system now functioning far better than most private hospital systems may end up looking more like them, to the detriment of patients and providers alike.

"Required reading for anyone who would like information (other than headlines and twiitter spasms). This book is a thoughtful, well researched look at the workings of a government-managed, integrated healthcare system throughout the country. These healthcare facilities meet or exceed community standards in over 90% of the U.S., something one would never know without gathering facts. Ms Gordon's book saves you a lot of the fact finding. I work for the VA and only wish I were a Veteran so i could get my care in the system. It's no more perfect than any of the prestigious institutions caught up in their own scandals but the forces wanting to close it down don't want you to know that. Beyond the many facts are stories of VA's unique understanding of the culture and needs of Veterans, unequalled anywhere else in health care. And, of course, a close look at the motivations (and funding sources) of those who are working hard to close it down."

  • Suzanne Gordon takes us through the VA health care system with some surprisingly positive news. The coordinated, ‘wholistic’ veteran centric care, the research that wouldn’t happen without the VA system, the groundbreaking innovations by the VHA. Innovations like the first successful US liver transplant operation, the development of the nicotine patch, and despite longer wait times better outcomes for VA cancer patients! A definite role model for national health care especially if fixed, fully staffed and fully funded. Thank you for this amazingly researched and thoughtful book.
  • This book will become a vital tool for understanding the Veterans Health System and the movement to protect it from privatization in the coming years. I learned much about the orchestrated media attacks against the Veterans Administration hospitals that are without merit, as shown by the Rand studies and admitted by Congress's own appointed Commission on Care. If we lose the VA system we will have lost the best model for a single-payer, government sponsored national health plan that exists in the U.S. Despite mis-management and deliberately scant staffing patterns, it gets high approvals from veterans whom it serves.

  • If you are interested in protecting the rights and EARNED benefits of our nation's heroes, this is a must read book! Expert in the healthcare industry, Suzanne Gordon, offers an insider's comparative look at what is behind lobbying efforts in DC to privatize veterans' healthcare. This volume is part of a larger work to be released in the future, that will expand the problems and truly compare what happens in the private sector versus the structure of veterans healthcare.
  • Every American should read this; about what trump, ryan and their nasty minions(what the republican party are trying to do privatize the VA, more blood for money at the expense of the vets)!! Ron
  • With the media and congress so quick to jump and criticize the VA, it is wonderful to see all of the things that the VA does right. Sure, there is room for improvement but, overall, the VA has been able to provide high quality healthcare at less cost than almost any other system in the country. Gordon's book explains these and other aspects of VA healthcare in a concise, well-written manner.
  • Great book, wish those in Congress would read it.
  • This is a must read for legislators, non-profit's involved in healthcare for veterans, even veterans, because few understand the real facts about veterans healthcare. Everyone has an opinion, but most are not informed by facts, they are instead informed by misleading news reports, statements by politicians trying to gain the veterans vote, and fake veteran service groups like those discussed in this book. It's a quick read, but packs in the facts needed to make sure veterans really get the care most Americans believe veterans deserve.
